The Altar Server at Saint Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Community is a male or female member of the assembly who assists the priest during the Eucharist and other liturgical ceremonies and: • Understands the Eucharistic celebration and other sacred rites, and the liturgical function of the ministry of Altar Service. • Participates fully in the liturgical celebration, joining with the assembly in prayer, song, and reflective silence. • Is committed to giving their time and talents to their parish community, demonstrating their willingness to serve God’s people in the ministry of Altar Service, and be appropriately prepared. Qualifications All Altar Servers must have received the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. It is recommended that Altar Servers be in the fifth grade or up (about ages 10-11 minimum). Training All who are ministers of Altar Service will receive appropriate training so that they may participate fully in the Eucharist and carry out their roles with reverence and care. Items covered in training are: • Tour of Church Space referencing sacred vessels, vestments, supplies, Liturgical books, and furnishings. -- Sacristy -- Sanctuary • Discussion of the structure of the Eucharistic Liturgy. • Walk-thru of “Procedures for Ministers of Altar Service” Bill Crosthwait is responsible for training those who wish to pursue the ministry of Altar Service.
